CREATURE COMFORTS CAFE

17TH AND PEARL, BOULDER, CO 2023

It all started when…

I painted the mural in 2021 during the Streetwise Mural festival.  The building was a vacant building when I painted it the first time.  Jess was super sweet and reached out to me once she secured the lease on the building.  She told me about the ethos of Creature Comforts (Jess please chime in) and we bonded over a shared belief in community care. For the last few years, I have been painting murals with vague phrases to encourage people to explore the depth of their empathy. This process includes abstract paintings that are fun and playful with empathetic phrases at the center point of the work.  With this process in mind, Jess created about 5 phrases that felt near and dear to her heart.  Using a blackout poetry method, I simplified the phrases and that is what lives on the wall today.  There are many calls to action including "Kindness first", "Smiles make smiles", and "Discover magic around you".  Each of these phrases and the others included on the wall celebrate the playful loving moments that exist in life and encourage patrons of the cafe to meditate on all things precious in life.  Because what we know, is that the in-between moments are what make this world so dang sweet.
