TODAY’S TOPIC: Inclusive Artist Communities
QUESTION- How do we make the Denver Creative/DIY Community more inclusive and accessible?
BRIEF DESCRIPTION- Inclusion is a hot topic today, but still many of our creative spaces including venues, galleries, and DIY spaces are inaccessible to people with disabilities. Access to affordable living and working spaces, and higher costing permits for spaces that are up to city code are barriers that many artists face on a daily basis. "Safety" codes are legally bound, but access to safe places for marginalized communities is hard to find.
DEFINITIONS
inclusion - the act of including : the state of being included. specifically the act of including all groups of people.
access - the ability, right, or permission to enter, speak with, or use. freedom or ability to obtain or make use of something.
gentrification - when a "low-income" neighborhood is altered through the buying and renovation of houses and stores by upper- or middle-income families/individuals, raising property values while displacing the former culture/community and perpetuating the cycle of capitalist colonization.
intersectionality - a theory which considers that the various aspects of humanity, such as class, race, sexual orientation, disability and gender, do not exist separately from each other, but are complexly interwoven, and that their relationships are essential to an understanding of the human condition. Intersectionality proposes that all aspects of one's identity need to be examined as simultaneously interacting with each other and affecting one's privilege and perception in society, and that these facets of identity cannot simply be observed separately. The framework of intersectionality provides an insight into how multiple systems of oppression interrelate and are interactive.
